Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of play-avalon.com (the "Service"). The Service is operated by Zhentao Tong, a sole proprietor based in New Jersey, USA ("we," "us," "our"). By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under 18, you represent that you have your parent or guardian's permission. You must provide accurate sign-in information and may not impersonate another person.

2. Accounts and Authentication

Sign-in is provided through Clerk (an authentication provider) using Google or Discord OAuth. We receive your account identifier and the profile information those providers share with us. You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account.

3. Coins; Purchases

Coins are an in-game currency used to create games. Joining games is free. One coin is required to create a game; this coin is consumed at the moment a game starts.
Coins have no cash value, are not redeemable for money or property, and are not transferable between accounts.
Purchases are processed by Stripe. We do not see, store, or log your card details.
All sales are final. Coins are non-refundable except as required by law and except for the automatic refund described below: if you abandon a game lobby before the game starts, the coin is automatically returned to your balance.
We may, at our sole discretion, issue refunds on a case-by-case basis through Stripe; doing so does not create an obligation to issue refunds in any other case.
Coins do not expire while your account is active. If we close the Service, we will provide reasonable notice and a method to use remaining coins where practical.

4. Bring-Your-Own-Key (BYOK) AI Speech

You may optionally provide your own OpenRouter API key when creating a game so that AI-controlled players generate speech via a large language model. If you do:

The key is held in this server's memory only for the duration of that game session and is discarded when the room ends. It is not written to disk and is not logged.
API charges incurred against your key are solely your responsibility. We do not pay for, refund, or reimburse OpenRouter charges.
You should not share an API key with other players or paste keys you do not control.

5. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer

AI-controlled players generate speech using algorithmic policies and, when configured, large language models. This speech may be inaccurate, nonsensical, or unintended. It does not represent our views or those of any other party. Do not treat it as advice or fact.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

Harass, threaten, or harm other users, including via the in-game chat / speech mechanics.
Attempt to circumvent the Service's security, rate limits, or gameplay rules.
Reverse-engineer, scrape, or stress-test the Service beyond ordinary use.
Use the Service for any unlawful purpose.

We may suspend or terminate your access for any violation of these Terms, with or without notice. We are not obligated to refund coins forfeited due to suspension or termination for cause.

7. Intellectual Property

The Service, including its source code, gameplay logic, and visual assets, is owned by us or our licensors. "Avalon" and related game mechanics derive from the public-domain folklore and from the published game "The Resistance: Avalon." Our implementation is an independent, non-commercial homage; we do not claim affiliation with the game's publisher or designer.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE." To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim arising from or related to the Service shall not exceed the greater of ten US dollars ($10) or the amount you paid us in the 90 days before the event giving rise to the claim.

10. Termination

You may stop using the Service and request account deletion at any time by emailing us. We may terminate or suspend the Service or your access to it at any time. On termination, all of your rights under these Terms cease.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, additional notice on the Service. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

12. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Jersey, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Bergen County, New Jersey.
